Anglers of all ages are invited to take advantage of Wisconsin’s yearly Winter Free Fishing Weekend this Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 17-18.

For two days, residents and non-residents may fish most state waters without purchasing a fishing license, trout stamp or salmon stamp (see exceptions regarding trout waters).

Winter Free Fishing Weekend gives families, friends and newcomers an opportunity to try ice fishing, open water angling or to introduce another to the sport.

The DNR reminds those aiming to utilize the weekend to remember that all fishing regulations remain in effect — size limits, bag limits and species restrictions. The 2025-2026 hook and line fishing and trout season regulations are online and printed in English and large print.

The DNR’s “Tackle Loaner” sites can help you. Many state parks offer loaner gear for both open water and ice fishing.

Fishing offers more than just a chance to hook a fish. It is a way to connect with nature, build lifelong habits, share time with friends and family and learn about Wisconsin’s aquatic resources.

The weekend also serves as a perfect opportunity to host a clinic or event. Angler-education instructors, fishing clubs, state parks and other organizations are encouraged to host fishing clinics during the free fishing weekend.

Free fishing weekends are held twice per year, once in the winter (this weekend) and again in the first full weekend in June (June 6-7).
